Studying under pressure
With the exam season once again on the horizon, it was the perfect time to watch LawCare’s webinar on “Top Tips for Studying Under Pressure” delivered by Elizabeth Rimmer on 22 May 2018.
The webinar gave some useful tips on how to optimise your study time, and how to successfully navigate the exam period in one piece. Although some of the advice given may be nothing revolutionary, it serves as an important reminder to those who, like myself, tend to fall into some bad habits during exam season. Such bad habits are quite counterproductive, and not ideal for successfully surviving this stressful period.
After watching this webinar, I’ve identified the following 5 tips which I personally think are the most useful to help survive the upcoming 2018 UK exam season.
- Spend time each day doing something you enjoy. Whatever you enjoy doing, do not give this up during exam time! It’s important to balance the intense study time with some quality downtime!

- Find a good place to study. Make sure it’s quiet, spacious, and with minimal distractions. Everyone is different – my colleague Rebecca often goes to the local library to study, whereas Tasha likes to go to a coffee shop in the evenings. Personally, I found coming into the office at the weekends to be the best environment.
- Ask for support. If you find you are unable to successfully balance work, studying and having a life, don’t be afraid to ask for help from your employer, and your family and friends.

- Eat well, drink lots of water and exercise. During exam time, my colleague Tasha is very strict about having at least one good healthy meal each day. Others, such as Rebecca, are strict about setting aside time daily (or every other day) to exercise. Either way, do whatever you need to do to keep fit and healthy!

Get enough quality sleep. Staying up super late to do some past paper questions, or getting up super early to read the Black Book, might seem like a good idea, but in reality it’s not doing your mental state any favours. I find that by getting some good quality z’s each night, my ability to study and actually remember what I’ve read vastly improves!

Good luck to everyone taking exams this year!
